What are Neuromodulators?
Wrinkles and fine lines have a number of different causes that are targeted by different cosmetic treatments. Injectable neuromodulators are the best answer to wrinkles that are the result of repeated muscle movements. Also referred to as dynamic wrinkles, these fine lines and creases usually appear near the mouth, brows, forehead, and eyes.
Because these wrinkles are caused by the facial expressions and movements that people make on a daily basis, neuromodulators target the root causes of these movements — the muscles. BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® are all formulated with a substance called botulinum toxin. When injected into the muscles in small amounts, this substance temporarily relaxes them, allowing the wrinkles and fine lines above them time to relax and smooth over.
Each neuromodulator injectable treatment takes less than 20 minutes to complete and brings patients virtually no downtime. While BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® are all made with botulinum toxin, they each are formulated slightly differently. This makes each of them better suited to treating different areas of the face.
BOTOX® is one of the most popular and widely recognizable aesthetic treatments available on the market today. This product has been approved for use in 78 countries, with over 10.9 million vials sold in the U.S. alone since 2002.
This injectable can be used to correct frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, vertical lip lines, chin dimpling, and even excessive sweating. BOTOX® is well suited to treat small, specific areas of wrinkling because it has a slightly heavier weight than Dysport® and XEOMIN®. This extra weight prevents it from diffusing to other areas of the face.
Another highly regarded neuromodulator, Dysport® is approved for cosmetic use in 57 countries and has 25 years of clinical experience around the world. This injectable is particularly well-suited to treat fine lines between the eyebrows and larger areas of wrinkling caused by muscle movements in general.
FDA-approved for aesthetic use in 2011, this relatively new neuromodulator is available in 20 countries worldwide and has been used to treat over one million people in the United States alone.
Unlike BOTOX® and Dysport® which both contain additives, XEOMIN® is made only of botulinum toxin. While these additives help prevent BOTOX® and Dysport® from dispersing throughout the face, they can also cause allergic reactions in many patients. This makes XEOMIN® an excellent treatment option for patients that have been sensitive to additives in the past.
